Guess Who Has A Psychopathic Personality?

Parent Category: Human Behavior Category: Psychology

Have you ever heard of Psychopathic Personality?
What is it? Well, it’s been around for a long time. It’s a mental disorder that was first identified in the early 19th century By a British Physician, John Pritchard. He proposed the term “moral imbecility” for those who are deficit in moral sense but whose intellectual ability was unimpaired.

In 1915 psychiatrists described Psychopathic Personality. The principle expressions:

  • Having shallow emotions.
  • Defective insight.
  • Absence of nervousness.
  • Lack of remorse or shame.
  • Showing superficial charm.
  • Pathological lying.
  • Egocentricity and inability to love.
  • Failure to establish close or intimate relationships.
  • Irresponsibility.
  • Impulsive antisocial acts.
  • Failure to learn from the experience.
  • Reckless behavior under the influence of alcohol.
  • Lack of long-term goals.

In 1984 The American Psychiatric Association dropped the term “Psychopathic Personality” for Antisocial Personality Disorder. It is still the same concept. The new term revised the list to the following:

1. Inability to sustain consistent work behavior.

2. Failure to conform to social norms with respect to lawful behavior. (i.e. crime )

3. Irritability and aggression, as indicated by frequent physical fights and assaults.

4. Repeated failure to honor financial obligations.

5. Failure to plan ahead or impulsively.

6. No regard for truth, as indicated by repeated lying, use of aliases, or “conning” others.

7. Recklessness regarding one’s own or another’s personal safety, as indicated by driving while intoxicated or current speeding.

8   Inability to function as a responsible parent.

9. Failure to sustain a monogamous relationship for more than one year.

10. Lack of remorse.

11. The presence of conduct disorder in childhood.

Even though there were some slight changes, it’s just about the same. You get the picture don’t you? Have you seen this kind of behavior in others? Not just one or two of the points listed, but many of the points listed. Sure you have. We all have seen this behavior.

How about groups? Ever seen groups of people with this behavior? What types of groups? Men? Women? Old people? Young people? Rich people; Poor People? Racial groups?

What group of people stands out the most in your mind and experience that consist of the Psychopathic Personality traits mentioned above?

I’ll give you a hint. Psychologists, who deal with criminals, especially violent criminals, use the above list a lot. Now, go find out which group of people that commits the most crime per capita than any other.
